The Rideau Canal is a chain of lakes, rivers and canal cuts. It was conceived in the wake of the War of 1812, and was to be a war-time supply route to Kingston and the Great Lakes. Completed in 1832, the Rideau Canal was one of the greatest engineering feats of the 19th century.
