DAY 4- Journal Entry:
Tuesday, August
10, 2004
by
Jennifer Brown, K4C Kayaker
We left the Narrows Lock at
8:50 a.m. on schedule but a little apprehensive
about the weather. Thunderstorms were forecasted,
but luckily the wind was at our backs and we made
great time, passing the Canadian Club resort by
9:30 a.m. (one hour faster than last year :).
After a quick washroom break, we continued on
for 20 minutes before having to pull over at a
small cove (complete with an inukshuk) due to
thunder and lightening, the first signs of a coming
storm.
After some discussion, and
another washroom break (during which a short biology
lesson was required), the group decided to head
back out knowing that the lunch destination was
only a kilometer away. Kayleigh was also looking
forward to putting some ointment on her mountain
climbing (or falling) injuries.
Lunch was made up of delicious
cold cuts and salads, and Murphy's Point provided
the perfect location, despite a little more rain.
Unfortunately, our resident waterboy Jason took
a tumble off the dock, twisting his ankle (lawsuit
in progress :), and had to be consoled by matante
Micheline with many brownies.
The rest of the trip across
the Big Rideau was made up of strong tail winds
(Dan, thanks for the umbrella), country tunes
on Chad's radio, and a quick stop at Mr.Rile's
to collect a generous donation of money collected
at a golf night. The day ended at Rideau Ferry
Harbour at around 2:45 p.m. The group is looking
forward to pizza being delivered by Pik-A-Pizza
in Smith Falls.
Note:
Come out and join us for a BBQ in Merrickville
tomorrow afternoon from 12:00 - 6:00 p.m. If you'd
like to send a note of encouragement to the kayakers,
email info@kayakingforcancer.com
and we'll pass it onto the team. Thanks!
